Papua New Guinean graphic artist and emerging fashion designer Linda Philau Pius has been invited to open an international runway in California. Now, PNG Fashion Week is calling on the public to help ensure financial hardship does not keep her from taking her place.

Linda, the founder of Philau Kolxsen, is one of only eight designers selected from across the Pacific to showcase at the inaugural PAZIFIKA BY DEZIGN: Fashion with Purpose. She is the only designer representing Papua New Guinea at the event, which will take place on 16 November 2026 at the Crowne Plaza in Foster City, California.

She has also been commissioned to create a special piece for Her Royal Highness Princess Royal Pilolevu of the Kingdom of Tonga, who is expected to attend.

For a designer who began her fashion journey in 2024, the invitation marks a remarkable step forward. It brings international recognition to work inspired by her grandmothers’ stories, her Manus and Goroka heritage, and her determination to create despite limited resources.

To help make her participation possible, PNG Fashion Week has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise K25,000 towards her airfare, visa expenses, fabric and materials, garment production, and freight.

A DREAM THAT SURVIVED DIFFICULT BEGINNINGS

Linda’s journey has unfolded alongside family responsibilities and the financial pressures familiar to many Papua New Guinean creatives.

Working as a graphic artist while developing her fashion label, she has had to navigate the distance between what she could imagine and what she could afford to make.

She recalls an early runway presentation where limited resources meant she could only show unfinished pieces rather than the complete garments she had envisioned. The experience brought her to tears. She knew she had more to offer.

Yet she kept going.

Through further fashion presentations, including PNG Fashion Week’s 2026 GENESIS runway, Linda has continued developing her craft and growing in confidence. Each presentation has given her another opportunity to bring her ideas to life and share the stories behind her work.

Her California invitation offers a chance to build on that progress, meet fellow Pacific designers and introduce her label to an international audience.

CROWNED BY ANCESTRY

At the heart of Linda’s work is a connection to family and place.

Her forthcoming PHILAPAN Collection carries the words “Crowned by Ancestry,” reflecting the family history that gives the collection its meaning.

Linda explains that the name Philau was given to her by the eldest matriarch of her father’s family in Manus. She connects it to Philapan, a Manus name associated with higher status or royal ancestry, and to the maritime heritage of the Manus voyagers, the Muengkol.

Through the collection, she hopes to honour those connections and the women whose stories first inspired her.

For Linda, the invitation is deeply personal. It is an opportunity to put Manus in the spotlight, celebrate her heritage and show how far she has come since those first unfinished pieces.

She is deeply thankful to God for the opportunity and determined to give it her very best.

THE INVITATION IS THERE—NOW SHE NEEDS HELP GETTING THERE

International recognition does not automatically provide the resources needed to travel or produce a collection.

For emerging designers in Papua New Guinea, the combined costs of materials, production, visas, flights and freight can make an overseas invitation difficult to accept, even after they have earned their place.

PNG Fashion Week has been seeking sponsorship to support Linda’s participation, but the assistance needed has not yet been secured. The organisation is now asking individuals, businesses and community networks to rally behind her.

PNG eBook Campaign, through its Rahiyen brand, is already supporting Linda’s collection as its official accessories sponsor. Further contributions will help meet the remaining costs of preparing and taking her work to California.

Those who know Linda describe her as shy and quietly determined. Asking publicly for help does not come easily to her. PNG Fashion Week is standing alongside her to help ensure her voice and her work have the chance to reach this new audience.

EVERY CONTRIBUTION COUNTS

The fundraising appeal welcomes contributions of any size.

Whether it is $5, $10, $100 or whatever a supporter can spare, every donation contributes towards the K25,000 target. Every gift is valued and received with gratitude.

People who cannot donate can still help by sharing the fundraiser, forwarding this article or introducing Linda to a business that may be able to provide sponsorship or practical assistance.

Businesses interested in supporting travel, fabric, production or freight are also encouraged to get in touch.

Linda’s journey is a reminder of the talent being developed in Papua New Guinea, often under difficult circumstances. Supporting her now can help turn international recognition into an opportunity she can actually embrace.

She has kept creating. She has earned the invitation. With the community behind her, she can take the next step.

When one of us wins, all of us win. Let’s help Linda get to California.
