THE QUEEN MAKER | DELILAH GONI - RAISING QUEENS IN THE HIGHLANDS

In the mountains of Papua New Guinea’s Highlands — where tradition runs deep and leadership structures have long been shaped by patriarchal norms — a quiet transformation is unfolding.

At the centre of that transformation stands Delilah Goni.

She does not wear the crown.

But she builds the stage where queens are made.

In Western Highlands Province, Delilah has helped create a powerful new platform for young women — a space where they can stand with confidence, celebrate their culture, and be recognised not only for their beauty, but for their intelligence, leadership, and vision for their communities.

For many of those women, it was the first time they had ever been given such a stage.

And behind that stage stands a woman who has always believed that opportunity must sometimes be built with your own hands.

A SPIRIT THAT WAS ALWAYS MOVING

Those who knew Delilah growing up remember a girl who could never sit still.

She was spontaneous, energetic, and always eager to help others. If there was something happening in the community, Delilah was involved. If someone needed assistance, she was often the first to volunteer.

Even as a young girl she displayed the instincts of an entrepreneur — someone who sees possibilities where others see limitations.

But perhaps more importantly, she had the rare ability to connect with people.

She earned the trust and affection of those around her through genuine care, hard work, and a natural curiosity about the world.

Those qualities would later become the foundation of her leadership.

THE MOMENT THE WORLD BEGAN TO NOTICE

Delilah’s creative journey found its national stage through PNG Fashion Week, a platform that has helped elevate some of Papua New Guinea’s most promising designers.

In 2023, she entered the competition and went on to win Designer of the Year, a moment that catapulted her into national recognition.

The award confirmed what many already knew — that Delilah possessed both creative vision and the determination to succeed.

But for her, success was never meant to stop at personal achievement.

She began organising events, working with creatives, and building networks that connected fashion, culture, and community leadership.

LEARNING THE WORLD OF PAGEANTRY

Around the same time, Delilah’s journey intersected with the national pageant world in a way that would shape her future.

She was selected as the designer for Miss Bird of Paradise 2023 contestant Miss Sky Health, Gloria Mabiria from Hela Province.

Through this experience, Delilah entered the world of pageantry not simply as a spectator but as a creative contributor.

Working closely with Gloria Mabiria, she was able to witness the dedication, preparation, and storytelling that goes into representing a province on the national stage.

More importantly, she began interacting with pageant organisers, learning the inner workings of how pageants are structured, organised, and delivered.

What many saw as simply a design opportunity became, for Delilah, an education in leadership, event organisation, and empowerment platforms.

She was watching, learning, and quietly preparing.

A CALL THAT IGNITED A VISION

Not long after, the Miss Bird of Paradise Pageant issued a national call for provinces to host their own provincial competitions.

For many regions, particularly in the Highlands, organising a pageant of that scale seemed daunting.

But Delilah saw something different.

She saw potential.

She saw the confidence and intelligence of young Highland women who had rarely been given platforms to express themselves publicly.

She saw an opportunity to create something transformative.

So she did what entrepreneurs do best.

She started knocking on doors.

A GOVERNOR WHO SAW THE POSSIBILITY

Delilah’s determination eventually caught the attention of Western Highlands Governor Wai Rapa.

The Governor saw more than just a young organiser with an ambitious idea.

He saw someone who recognised the untapped potential of confident young women in the Highlands.

He saw someone willing to work tirelessly to make that vision real.

Recognising the importance of such a platform, the provincial government offered support to help Delilah bring the idea to life.

BUILDING SOMETHING FROM ALMOST NOTHING

Even with backing, the road ahead was not easy.

Resources were limited. The workload was enormous.

But Delilah refused to give up.

With a small team of dedicated people, she worked tirelessly to organise what would become the first Highlands provincial pageant in Western Highlands Province.

Despite being the Founder and Chairlady, Delilah never placed herself above the work.

In fact, she was often the one doing the most.

She ironed clothes.
She fed the team.
She helped dress contestants.
She organised rehearsals.
She solved last-minute crises.

If something needed to be done, Delilah did it.

She became a true jack of all trades, driven by a deep belief that the young women on that stage deserved every opportunity to succeed.

THE NIGHT A QUEEN WAS CROWNED

When the night of the pageant finally arrived, it was more than just an event.

It was a moment of history for the Western Highlands.

Young women stepped forward representing their provinces with pride, sharing their stories, ambitions, and hopes for the future.

When Iampela Popena was crowned the winner, the applause filled the room.

A queen had been chosen.

But those who understood the journey knew something deeper.

Because behind every crown is someone who made the moment possible.

Behind every confident step on that stage was the woman who worked tirelessly to build the platform.

Delilah Goni.

THE TRUE POWER OF A QUEEN MAKER

The legacy of Delilah Goni is not simply the pageant she organised.

It is the confidence she helped ignite in a generation of Highland women.

She has shown that leadership does not always come with titles.

Sometimes it comes through determination, service, and the courage to create opportunities where none existed before.

And while crowns may shine brightly under stage lights, the true architects of change often stand quietly behind them.

Delilah Goni is one of those architects.

A designer.
An entrepreneur.
A community builder.

And above all —

A Queen Maker.
