BILUM TAKES THE RUNWAY: PNG’S FLORENCE JAUKEA KAMEL STUNS AT FIJI FASHION WEEK

PORT MORESBY – May 31, 2025 - By PNG Fashion Week SUVA, FIJI — Papua New Guinea’s rich cultural identity took center stage at Fiji Fashion Week 2025, as celebrated designer Florence Jaukea Kamel, “Bilum Meri” proudly presented a groundbreaking collection that showcased the iconic bilum in contemporary fashion.

In a proud moment for PNG’s creative industry, Kamel’s participation in the regional fashion event was made possible through the support of Air Niugini, reaffirming the national carrier’s commitment to promoting Papua New Guinean culture across international platforms. The showcase was also a significant milestone for PNG Fashion Week, which continues to empower local designers and elevate indigenous craftsmanship onto the world stage.

“Bilum is more than a bag,” said Kamel. “It is a living expression of our stories, our womanhood, our strength. Taking it to Fiji was about showing that our heritage belongs in the global conversation of fashion.” Wearing one of Kamel’s standout bilum garments on the Fijian runway was Incennea Minz, the official Brand Ambassador for PNG Fashion Week. Her appearance became a defining moment of the event, as she walked with pride and purpose, draped in handwoven designs that symbolized the resilience and artistry of Papua New Guinean women.

“It was more than just modeling,” said Minz. “I felt like I was representing every woman from our country — every mother, sister, and daughter who weaves her story into every thread. It was emotional and unforgettable.” The Bilum, traditionally crafted by hand and deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Papua New Guinea, was reimagined by Kamel into modern silhouettes that merged tradition with elegance. Her pieces sparked admiration and discussion from designers, media, and audiences across the Pacific, highlighting the growing relevance of Papua New Guinean design in the international fashion scene.

PNG Fashion Week has emerged as a key platform for nurturing local talent and celebrating the nation’s diverse heritage. Events like these offer crucial visibility for indigenous design while strengthening the Pacific’s creative bonds. “This moment reflects what we’ve always known — that Papua New Guinea has a unique voice, one that resonates beyond our borders,” said Philma Kelegai, Managing Director, PNG Fashion Week. “We are incredibly proud of Florende and Incennea for carrying that message so powerfully.”

With strong national support and a clear cultural vision, PNG fashion is on the rise. The success of Kamel’s Bilum collection at Fiji Fashion Week is not just a win for the designer, but a win for the country — one woven, worn, and walked with pride.
