NICHOLAS HUXLEY TO LEAD INTENSIVE FASHION WORKSHOPS FOR PNG FASHION WEEK 2025

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – May 3, 2025

Papua New Guinea’s fashion scene is preparing for one of its most exciting milestones yet—Nicholas Huxley, an internationally renowned fashion educator and PNG-born creative, will return to lead intensive workshops for PNG Fashion Week 2025. Set to take place in June, July, and September, these workshops will provide hands-on training for designers, models, stylists, and creatives eager to grow their skills and compete on a global scale. The final leg of the workshop series will lead directly into PNG Fashion Week’s highly anticipated Genesis Showcase in September, giving participants a platform to put their learning into action in front of national and international audiences.

Huxley’s story comes full circle with this homecoming. Born and raised in Papua New Guinea as one of five boys, his childhood was shaped by creativity and storytelling—his mother worked for ABC as a correspondent, and his father was the managing editor of the Times Courier newspaper. His formal journey into fashion began in 1973 at East Sydney Technical College (now TAFE NSW Fashion Design Studio), where he eventually became the institution’s most iconic head teacher, retiring in 2018. Over a career spanning four decades, Nicholas mentored some of the world’s top fashion names, including Akira Isogawa, Alex Perry, Nicky Zimmermann, Lisa Ho, Dion Lee, and Romance Was Born. He also supported young talent through student showcases at Australian Fashion Week and curated high-profile events at the Strand Arcade.

A creative polymath, Nicholas has also worked across fashion magazines, film, and TV—creating illustrations for Vogue, Marie Claire, and Elle, and dressing celebrities like Nicole Kidman, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and even tailoring a suit for Bette Davis. He was nominated for an AFI Award for his costume design in Sons of Steel and has received multiple awards from the Fashion Industry of Australia, alongside several nominations for the NSW Government’s Fashion Laureate Award and the Fashion Group International Lifetime Achievement Award. His experience spans continents, from advising Miami Dade College on launching the Miami Fashion Institute, to supporting the Fiji and Pacific Islands Fashion Week. In 2018, he debuted his first solo art exhibition at Maunsell Wicks Gallery, showcasing another dimension of his visual storytelling.

Nicholas Huxley’s partnership with PNG Fashion Week is deeply aligned with the platform’s mission. Since its inception in 2017, PNG Fashion Week has been committed to building the country’s creative economy by investing in the professional development of local talent and amplifying PNG’s voice in the global fashion narrative. Over the years, it has provided opportunities for hundreds of emerging designers, models, makeup artists, photographers, and small businesses through training, mentorship, and international exposure. The organization’s commitment to community-based growth, inclusion, and innovation has transformed PNG Fashion Week from a niche event into a nationally celebrated movement.

This upcoming workshop series represents more than just skills training—it’s a moment of empowerment. With Nicholas’s global pedigree and personal connection to PNG, the initiative offers creatives a rare chance to learn from a master who understands both the international fashion industry and the cultural richness of Papua New Guinea. This has been made possible through the invaluable support of Air Niugini, the official air carrier and cornerstone partner of PNG Fashion Week and the Pacific Fashion Summit. Their ongoing commitment to cultural advancement and regional connectivity has played a crucial role in enabling initiatives like this one, helping to bring global expertise home and open new pathways for PNG’s creative communities.

As PNG Fashion Week continues to champion local excellence and global ambition, this collaboration marks a new chapter in fashion education and cultural celebration.
