MODEL CITIZEN: WHERE PAPUA NEW GUINEA’S NEXT GENERATION OF RUNWAY LEADERS ARE FORGED

In the world of fashion, the runway is often seen as a place of glamour — bright lights, striking silhouettes and the quiet confidence of a model walking with purpose. But behind every powerful runway moment lies something far deeper: discipline, training, and personal transformation.

At the heart of PNG Fashion Week’s talent pipeline is a program designed to do exactly that.

Introducing Model Citizen: Runway & Leadership Intensive — PNG Fashion Week’s official model development program created to prepare aspiring models not only for the runway, but for leadership, professionalism and personal growth.

Because at PNG Fashion Week, a model is never just a model.

A model is an ambassador.

More Than a Runway Walk

The Model Citizen Intensive is a three-day immersive training experience that goes beyond teaching someone how to walk a runway. It is about building the complete individual — someone who understands the responsibility of representing designers, culture and country.

Participants learn the fundamentals of runway technique: posture, balance, movement and stage presence. But equally important are the lessons that happen off the runway.

Confidence.
Communication.
Professionalism.

Through workshops and practical sessions, participants are introduced to the realities of the fashion industry — from grooming and styling to backstage etiquette and working within a professional production environment.

It is fashion training grounded in discipline and purpose.

Leadership Through Fashion

What makes Model Citizen unique is its emphasis on leadership and character.

Fashion in Papua New Guinea has evolved into something far more powerful than clothing. It has become a platform for culture, identity and national pride.

Those who step onto the runway represent more than themselves — they represent designers, communities and the creative spirit of Papua New Guinea.

The program therefore teaches participants how to develop what PNG Fashion Week calls the “Ambassador Mindset” — the ability to carry oneself with dignity, awareness and responsibility both on and off the runway.

Real Runway Experience

The highlight of the intensive is live runway immersion at Port Moresby Fashion Week, where participants witness and experience the environment of a professional fashion production.

From choreography to group formations and backstage coordination, trainees gain a rare glimpse into the world behind the curtains — learning how real fashion shows operate under the standards set by PNG Fashion Week.

For many, it is the first step into an industry that continues to grow both nationally and internationally.

Opening the Door

Graduates of the program receive the title Certified Model Citizen – Runway Ready Level, marking their completion of the training.

Importantly, the program does not promise immediate entry into PNG Fashion Week. Instead, it provides something far more valuable: the foundation and the opportunity.

It is a foot in the door.

And for those with determination, talent and discipline, that door can lead to remarkable places.

The Future of PNG Fashion

Over the years, PNG Fashion Week has built a reputation for nurturing talent and providing platforms for emerging creatives — from designers to photographers to models.

The Model Citizen program continues that mission, ensuring that the next generation of runway talent is prepared not only for the spotlight, but for the responsibility that comes with it.

Because fashion in Papua New Guinea is not simply about style.

It is about culture, confidence and leadership.

And the future of that runway begins with the young men and women who choose to step forward, train hard, and become Model Citizens.
